genulab party · valentine's dayfebruary 14 1998 @ the ballroom, copenhagen - denmarkdj:s al'had (dk) · jay (dk) · david (swe) __________________________________________________ |
I take a bow. Well done Genulab - mostly for getting such a great crowd to attend the party but also for handling it very well. A terrific party, with an awesome vibe - or was it perhaps just me sensing it? =:) Seriously, if you missed it - too bad!!! Arriving early (like always) we found ourselves in an almost empty Eigens Ballroom just after 23 on Saturday night. AlHad arrived at the same time, and he went on straight away. A nice opening of the night, actually, with some catchy house tunes filling the venue. I was seriously worried for a while due to the group of (*sorry*) youngsters who'd washed and ironed their tracksuits for a party night. I'm not one to judge ppl for the way they dress but let's face it - the Adidas tracksuits do have a reputation of their own, even here in Sweden. Well, that turned out to be a waste of energy, pretty soon the place was filled up with people not dressing in tracksuits and as the night got older and older, the tracksuits seemed to totally vanish right before my eyes. Apart from a handful of people that I really enjoy seeing and meeting at parties, everybody were there. I was (for once) dedicating my night to the dance floor instead of the usual chit chatting (ok, I did my fair share of that too!) and it was sheer bliss. AlHad's set, which started out with house, slowly transformed into stompy, kicking psytrance. I'm not too keen on giving all the genres separate names (basically because I'm not too clear on _how_ to separate them!) but I'd describe it as psytrance anyway. So flame me. It was catchy, and it sure got the crowd going. When AlHad had us just where he wanted us, he stepped down and let Jay continue. I've never really taken the time (or had the opportunity) to get into any of Jay's sets, but I'm impressed. As were the rest of the hundreds of ppl up on the floor, sweating the night away. (At least I hope they were!) Jay's set went smoothly and stompy until an accident stopped him and everybody caught up in a dance. The sound (and some lights?) went off, and it lasted for some 5-10 minutes (?). Unfortunately these things happen, too bad, and not a lot can be done to prevent it. After Jay's full-on set, Malmö's pride David came on. I was expecting the usual techno-set from him (which I btw love to bits!) but I was in for a surprise! Psytrance! My favorite tunes too, to put icing on the cake! Oh yes, Ololiuqui *love* and Planet B.E.N. *love* and I _think_ he threw in a Spectral track there somewhere too. Great, but as I had my mind set on the usual David-set (!) I have to admit I was a tad bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the set was just my flavour (the word just popped right out on the screen..) yet still not. David left quite early (for a skiing holiday, hope it was great!!) and AlHad got the honour to finish the party off. I don't know about you others, but I'd been dancing for 7 hours (more or less intense) and all I wanted was tunes escorting me downstairs and getting me comfortably relaxed in time for my long trip back to Sweden. The peeps I spoke to wanted the same thing, but AlHad wanted otherwise. For this time, I'll let it pass. =:) The party came to a stop just after 8 am, and by then, it was a relief. Notes on the party in general: the few backdrops were nice, but what was it with the _white_ sheets covering the entire left wall just after entering? The last thing we want is light, if there's nothing but sheets to hang there - for God's sake hang black or dark ones! Reasonably short queue to the ladies', nice sound system (almost a bit too loud, I never managed to get myself heard on the dance floor - but then again; I'm not there to talk, I'm there to dance!) and really nice guards. Minus: I wanted the café across the yard to be open! Guess I can't have it all my way. The vibe on the dance floor took me a few years back, more of this please! Smiles & Huggies * Chrissie * |
