syndrom partymarch 14 1998 @ pumpehuset, copenhagen - denmarkdj:s zonic (dk) · saso (dk) · dominic lamb (uk) live: slinky wizard _______________________________________________ |
This was in fact my first ever visit at Pumpehuset, but considering it's usually a venue for concerts that might not be strange at all. All I knew on forehand was that it is big, with a capacity of approximately 1500 ppl. Going there with no expectations whatsoever (perhaps the thought of a half-empty venue did cross my mind, I'm not sure) I can now say that the experience was far beyond pleasant. The queue was long, but it didn't take half as long as we had suspected to get to the entrance. Peeking in, almost there, I saw cotton threads being lit up by blacklights, creating a cobweb-like bannister all the way upstairs, and some backdrops perfectly surrounding the entrance. Well inside, my bag was thoroughly searched (and I mean THOROUGHLY, not even my filofax was left untouched) and we were given a thin black plastic bracelet instead of the usual stamp. We left our coats in the well-organized yet busy wardrobe, checked out the bar area briefly and went upstairs to check the dance floor out. Up, up, up, two sets of stairs and there we were. A big square dance floor with a stage at the very end (where they'd logically put the dj- and liveact-equipment) and all along the walls, really nice big backdrops hanging side by side. The sound was incredible, in fact it was almost too good! (imagine that!) Passing the loudspeaker at a close range made every bone in my body jump around, the eardrums live a life on their own as they desperately tried to keep my head intact (!) and it kept me wondering if I really could believe what I was hearing. Amazing! Great job, Janus and Mechele and whoever else being involved in the sound system! Saso was playing, and the music grabbed a hold of me instantly. Brilliant music, no complaints from me on the mixing and a crowd that willingly and wildly danced around. He had been playing for a while, and when he jumped down, Slinky Wizard came on. A short silent break and then a smashing tune after another floating out from the speakers, putting us all under a spell. (wizard - spell..got it?) =:) Up on stage, in front of two of the wizards, a guy dressed in black juggled a long stick with green glowing ends. Not only did the act itself get a lot of attention, he also enhanced it by wearing a fishnet-styled outfit, see-through, revealing just a skimpy g-string...I'm pretty sure I speak for all of us when I say that we all had our eyes nailed on him as he juggled along. =:) The set seemed to last for a long time, perhaps due to the cleverly constructed set with tunes transforming so nicely and appropriately into each other that it seemed to be one long track just taking different turns and shifting a bit in tempo and melody now and then. (this is how _I_ experienced the set, so don't hold me responsible if someone expresses a whole other opinion!) The set ended just like it'd begun, with a short break of total silence. We showed our gratitude by applauding, whistling & shouting and then Zonic took over to deliver a slick, stompy and uplifting set. There had been a slight change in the schedule, leading to Zonic and Dominic Lamb sharing what should have been just DL's time. I doubt a lot of ppl actually noticed this, though, and I don't think it would've mattered that much anyway. The music was great, the sound still brilliant and as the night grew older, the crowd really got going. I did have my doubts as we were standing in the queue earlier that evening, seeing all kinds of people wearing all kinds of creations arriving to Pumpehuset. At one point, I was sure Copenhagen celebrated their own Halloween this night - and I still wonder where all these trippy, highly imaginative and exhibionistic people came from. Being a bit exhausted and needing a rest, I went downstairs and stayed on there a bit longer than intended. When I finally got back up, it was Zonic playing - again. This was the set which was intended for him in the first place, the morning- & finishing set. What can I say? WOW. The weak ones had left the dance floor (no harm intended! you were all very brave!) and left was a small crowd, floating out and covering every inch of the floor but giving all lots of space to freak out on. =:) Zonic, I salute you! _I_ was totally 'aving it, and so was the rest of the crowd. Full-on tracks with guitars, (reminding at least me of our beloved Delta) a hypnotizing bass and such energy, I felt nothing but fulfilling joy. At one point, with a certain X-Dream track blasting at us, this felt close to ecstatic. But hey, this is _my_ opinion. 8 am it got scaringly quiet and we knew that there would be no more, and another party in Copenhagen had been lived through, experienced and enjoyed. Special smiles and hugs to Denis and his group - coming all the way from Norway to attend this party! - and the biggest hug in history to Zonic. Also, thanks to The Flying Scotsman! And the Copenhagen party crew! And....I better get off or this will be embarrassing. =:) When's the next Syndrom party then? Gazillions Of Fluffy Fluoro Huggies * Chrissie * |
